12 Tips to Increase Laptop Battery Lifespan

Many times you wonder why your replacement laptop computer battery dies so quickly and if there are any precautions you can take to avoid this problem. If you care for and maintain your batteries properly, you can easily extend the lives of your laptop computer replacement batteries. It can be frustrating when you purchase a replacement battery for your laptop and after a few months the battery life has significantly declined. This is not what you want to happen. Below are some simple steps that can be taken to ensure that your battery lasts for its maximum potential.
Here is Some Tips which really helps to increase Battery Lifespan

  1. Decrease your laptop screen brightness….lowest level can save your battery power loss, so you can squeeze out some extra battery juice.
  2. Remove external devices Generally external USB devices like Pendrives, mouse, external hard-disk consume more powers, these devices are not crucial so shutdown those devices when your laptop in backup mode.
  3. Don’t use CD-DVD drives while your laptop is running from battery, because optical drives consume more power compare to hard disk.
  4. Defrag Harddisk regularly because after defragging your hard disk  is more efficient in performance, so it consume less power.
  5. Use Hibernate mode If you want to take some rest don’t switch to standby mode, switch to hibernate mode so that  it  will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.
  6. Avoid Multitask Running several background programs consumes more battery power, if you are working with spreadsheet ,turnoff other application programs like mp3 players, word processors ,which is currently running in your taskbar
  7. Set power option as optimize Access power options of Windows in your control panel setup is so that your power management is optimized.
  8. Turnoff auto save options Generally in MS-Word and MS-Excel autosave option is enabled by default, it save the document at regular interval, this consumes more power, by disabling auto save option we can save small amount of power.
  9. Keep the battery contact clean If  battery contacts are not clean it wont transfer power in efficient manner, so clean your battery terminals with alcohol once in a couple of month.
  10. Take care of battery Do not leave a charged battery dormant for a long time. Regular exercise is very necessary for long life of battery. If you are not want to use your laptop for more than 1 month disconnect your battery from laptop.
  11. Avoid high graphics while you are in backup mode don’t use high Graphic application or programs like Photoshop, AutoCAD, and Games. And also using your desktop theme as classic theme you can save power loss.
  12. Get More Efficient Laptops now days some manufacturer offering long life battery laptops, get it one.

5 steps to Keep Laptop bettery charge for a long period

you should be careful while using laptop and want to know how to utilize the Laptop battery charge in a better and efficient way. So the important points you need to remember to retain the Laptop battery charge for long are:
1. Turn off Wireless and Blue-tooth
If the Wi-Fi button is on ,it will take additional power to scan available wireless networks present in that area. If it fails to find any wireless network it will not stop the process and continually scan for the wireless networks. This process will reduce the battery charge. The story is same for Blue-tooth too. So it is better turn off the wireless button on your laptop.
2. Avoid playing computer games
It is better avoid playing games on your Laptop to keep the battery charge for long. Playing games on your Laptop drain laptop batteries.
3. Reduce the Laptop Speaker Volume and don’t play any movies

4. Reduce screen brightness

5. Avoid using external devices like external mouse, DVD drive,USB adapters etc

6. Avoid using multimedia application on your Laptop

So the tips written above might be very silly for you but I am sure most of us won’t care the simple things in their life.

How to replace a Laptop Screen

How to take an LCD screen off of a laptop and reconnect a new one.
When the screen on a laptop breaks, it can be a very intimidating problem indeed for those who have never taken a laptop apart in the past before, In this Instructable i hope to dispel a part of that mystery in an effort to empower you so you can repair your own laptop next time it breaks.

Things you will need
a small phillips head Screw driver
a few small cups or containers (for the many screws on your laptop)
a small flat head screw driver (for the plastic clips on the top bezel)
and a Replacement screen ( the most expensive part, but if you look in craigslist you can get a broken laptop with a working screen fairly easy and replace your broken machine with the working parts from the other broken laptop) or you can go through your laptop manufacturer to order a new screen. (usually not cheap)
One more note. by perfoming these actions you will be voiding your warranty assuming you have any left on the machine. if you do have a warranty on the machine, just send it out to the Depot and get it fixed for free. if you have no more warranty then forget the above and get ready to get our hands dirty =D the laptops already broken any way what more can you do to it =P also, before touching any circuits or any thing its good to ground yourself to dispel any static electricity you may have on you. so touch some bare metal Or if you have it pull out your anti static strap and make good use of it.
step 1pulling screws

start by flipping your laptop over and Removing the Battery and every screw on the screen side of your laptop (remember to pull the screws that are hiding Under the battery as well)
Then you will remove a keyboard screw which is normally in the middle of the laptop (it will commonly have a small image of a keyboard near it to make things easier for you)
the last thing we will do is disconnect the Wireless antenna wires.
On the HP dv9000 series the wireless card is kept under the same plate as the Memory which makes things easy for us since it gives us a little more room.
locate which little plate is hiding your wireless card (it doesn’t hurt to open them all up and see what’s under them all any way since this is a learning experience)
once you have located the card with the black and antenna wires snaking away from it Note which wire goes to which side of the card (I’m not sure how important it is to re attache them properly since their just clipped wires and they don’t close any circuit but its good to re attache things the right way the first time haha)
OK now were ready to go to the top side of the laptop.

step 2speaker bezel removal and annoying plastic clip step.

ok so with the computer off and battery pulled out of the unit, Press and hold the power button for 20 – 30 seconds to dispel any remaining power in the capacitors and then take the Speaker bezel off of the unit with your Flat head screw driver.
take your time and you wont break any of the plastic clips. we do want this unit to go back together when where done.

step 3screen screws and wires

Once you have removed the speaker bezel you will see (in my case) a total of 6 wires coming from the bottom of the screen and feeding into the laptop.

from left to right
Video cable, (the cable which controls all aspects of color and brightness on the lcd ..backlight and such) next will be 2 thin wires which control the 2 mics located by the webcam on this monitor
on the right side of the screen you have your wireless antenna wires and the webcam conroller wire, your replacement screen should have all of these in it already.
so you can simply disconnect the wires from the laptop and leave them attached to the screen.
if you do not have these wires coming from your new screen be concerned, you may have the wrong screen or simply a lesser model.
you can consider taking the laptop screen apart and running them up the sides (it can be quite a hassle unfortunately but is certainly do-able)
But back to it, go ahead and pull out the 2 – 3 or 4 screws connected to the Hinges of the laptop screen so you can lift it GENTLY from the laptop.
now with the monitor out of the way (but still tethered to the laptop through the antenna wires)
we can remove the Keyboard to do this, on the top of the keyboard you will notice 3 to 5 screws on the top of the keyboard go ahead and pull these and keep them seperate
(they will be a different color so they wont be to hard to keep seperate but it makes things easier if were dividing screws from the get go any way) then gently lift the keyboard slightly and pull upward (toward the screen) Then tip the keyboard so you can see underneath it and disconnect the cable attaching the keyboard to the laptop. dont be rough with this cable, it will only cause problems and more money if you break the keyboard cable while trying to fix your laptop screen… you might just throw the entire thing across the room in frustration =O haha we dont want that.

step 4snaking the antenna’s

first thing you should notice after pulling the keyboard off is the track of the wireless antenna’s
(its the only reason were going this deep atleast)
so go ahead and release the wires from their little track and clips, and then gently snake the antenna ends through the whole which allows them to connect to the wireless card on the bottom of the laptop. Be sure to remember how it snakes through if yours has any unexpected twists or hooks because you will need to put the new antenna wires back through this same way in a second.

step 5throwing it back together.

once you have got them out, go ahead and move your broken screen away, far away but dont trash it later, the components on it may still be usefull. then grab your new monitor and begin by snaking the wireless antenna wires back through and latching them into place. replace the Keyboard back in position, Don’t forget to reconnect the wire under the keyboard.
screw that back into place. (this is where we start counting screws.. we dont want to have any left over so hopefully you did a good job remembering where they all go)
reattach the video, mic, and webcam wires to the laptop, then Screw the laptop hinges Back to the laptop. grab the laptop bezel, snap that unit back into place, and close the laptop, flip it over, and begin replacing all the screws… Do you have any left over? Congratulations you win!
lide that battery back into place (oh connect the wireless antenna wires if you havent, just press them back into their sockets) And thats all it takes, Your done and done. flip that sucker back on and see if you got swindled and bought another broken screen or if you forgot to hook up a wire properly =P haha if it turns on fine, you were successfull pat yourself on the back and wait for something else to break so you can take your new found confidence and fix her up again =D
hope you enjoyed my first instructable, hope to submit more and better ones in the future and i hope it was informative and helpful.

How to Clean Laptop Screen

Keeping your laptop display clean is very essential. If you are working on graphics or watching photos or videos, dirt and fingerprints left on the screen can alter the appearance of the image making it difficult to judge the quality. Display of the laptop is sensitive therefore certain care should be taken while cleaning your laptop or any other LCD screen.

Things you may require to clean your LCD

  • A soft lint-free cotton cloth (100% cotton t-shirt, terry towel, etc.,)
  • Distilled water
  • Isopropyl alcohol (or white vinegar)
  • Spray bottle

You may clean the screen depending on the smears and smudges present on the screen. If only little dust is present on the screen try dry dusting the screen by wiping the screen with a cotton cloth along one direction, top to bottom or left to right. If this does not give desired results, then you can try cleaning the screen with some of the cleaning solutions.

Dirt and other organic stains left on the screen can be effectively removed by using alcohol and water solution. Alcohol cleans any organic marks like fingerprints or oily marks left on the screen, while water removes any dirt or mineral strains present on the screen.

Process to clean your LCD / Laptop screen

  1. Try dry dusting the screen first with a dry cotton cloth. In most of the cases, this gives better results if only little dust is present on the screen. If you can still find any smudges on the screen then try below step.
  2. In a clean spray bottle mix distilled water and alcohol in 1:1 ratio and spray the solution on to the cotton cloth and wipe the screen with the cloth along one direction or in circular motion. Avoid putting pressure on the screen, which may damage the screen.

How Not to Clean Screens

  1. Never use tissue or paper towels to clean the laptop screen as they are made up of wood and contain fibers, which can scratch the screen surface.
  2. Do not use any cleaning products available in the market to clean the display as they contain some harsh chemicals like ammonia, which can peal out the protective layer of the screen.
  3. Never apply excess pressure to hold the cloth close to the screen as excess pressure can damage pixels in the screen.
  4. Never spray the water and alcohol solution directly on to the screen as this can short circuit electronic components present in laptop.
  5. Do not excessively wet the cloth with the solution use only required amount of solution to clean the screen.
  6. Do not use tap water for making the cleaning solution as the tap water contains minerals that may leave strains on the screen.
  7. Make sure that the screen is completely dry before you close the screen, if there is any excess liquid present on the screen wipe it with the dry area of the cloth.

All the above tips and measures can be taken for effective and safe cleaning of your LCD or laptop screen. It is always recommended to shield your laptop screen with protective scratch guards that are readily available in the market.

how to recover files from a laptop with crashed Windows OS.

In this guide I explain how to recover files from a laptop with crashed Windows OS. You can use same technique to recover files from desktop computers. I will be recovering files using Knoppix live Linux CD. You can follow my guide even if you have never used Linux before.

You should be able to use my data recovery guide in one of the following scenarios:
1. Windows OS crashed and your laptop (or desktop) displays BSOD error (example on the picture below).
2. Your computer got infected with viruses or spyware and will not boot to the desktop.
3. Windows will not boot because some boot files are missing or corrupted.
4. You forgot password for your user account.
5. Windows will not load because the hard drive has bad sectors or other minor damage.
6. You accidentally deleted or damaged some Windows system files.

In my example I am using Knoppix version 6.0.1 which is the latest one at the time of writing this guide.
Your Knoppix might look different as they release newer versions, but general file recovery steps will be the same.

FILE RECOVERY STEPS:

STEP 1.

Download an ISO image of the latest Knoppix operating system from one of the following Knoppix mirrors.
- Select which server you want to use by the closest location (Download from).
- Select protocol to use, [ftp] or [http] (doesn’t really matter, you can use either one).
- Accept download agreement.
- Select the latest version available and download .iso file on your working computer. Again, in my example I am using Knoppix version 6.0.1.
- Burn .iso image to a CD. If you don’t have burning software installed, you can use CDburnerXP (free software).

Now you’ll have to boot your laptop (desktop) computer form this Knoppix CD.

STEP2.

It’s likely that in your laptop the hard drive listed as first device in the boot menu. If that’s the case, the laptop will not boot from the Knoppix CD automatically. You’ll have to force it boot from the CD/DVD drive.
- Insert Knoppix CD into the optical drive.
- Restart laptop.
- Access boot menu. In many laptops you can press F12 when logo appears on the screen in order to access boot menu.
- Select CD/DVD drive as bootable device and press enter.

Alternatively, you can enter the BIOS setup menu and change boot order in there. Make sure the CD/DVD drive is listed above the hard drive.

STEP 3.

When your laptop starts booting from the Knoppix CD, you’ll see screen similar to one on the picture below. Do not touch anything, just wait.

In a few minute it will boot to the desktop shown on the picture below. Now you are ready to access the hard drive and recover your files.

STEP 4.

Click on My Documents icon in the top left corner. A new window will open.
If the hard drive in your computer is in good working shape, it should be listed in the left pane.
In my example the hard drive name is IBM_PRELOAD (I’m recovering data from a ThinkPad laptop).

If you click on the hard drive, the hard drive content will be listed in the right pane.

Can you see your files? Good!!!
That means there is a chance can recover them.

STEP 5.

I will be recovering files to an external USB flash drive.
You can recover files to an external hard drive but you have to make sure that your hard drive is formatted with FAT32 file system (not NTFS).
You will not be able to copy files to a drive formatted with NTFS.

By default most USB flash drives are formatted with FAT32 file system (FAT16 is OK too).

When you insert your USB flash drive (or external hard drive) into the laptop, it will pop up in the same left pane.

Click on My Document icon again and create a second window.
In the left window I have files located on the laptop hard drive.
In the right window I have files located on the external USB flash drive.

STEP 6.

In the USB flash drive pane create a folder where you want to transfer recovered files.
- Right click on the empty area.
- Select Create New >> Folder.

I created a new folder and called it DATA-RECOVERY.
Click on the newly created folder and open it up.

Now you are ready to transfer files from the hard drive to the external USB flash drive.

Simply drag and drop files from left to right windows and wait until the transfer is complete.

After data transfer is complete, you can unplug the USB flash drive (or external hard drive) from your failed computer and plug it into any other working computer.

The recovered files will be on the drive.

How to recover data from failed laptop or notebook

Let’s say your laptop failed to start but you have some important files on the hard drive you would like to access. Is it possible to recover data from a failed laptop or notebook computer? Yes, it is and the process is relatively simple.

First of all, I assume that the hard drive in your failed laptop is not damaged. The laptop fails to start but the hard drive is in a good working condition.

In order to recover data you will have to access and remove the hard drive. Fortunately in most laptops the hard drive can be easily accessed through a hatch on the bottom. If the hard drive has mounting brackets installed (like in my example), it might be necessary to remove those brackets.

How to recover data from a laptop IDE hard drive.

Let’s start with an IDE hard drive also known as PATA hard drive.
On the picture below you see a regular IDE hard drive. It has two rows of pins on the front side.

The easiest way to access and recover data from an IDE hard drive would be using an external USB enclosure. Make sure to choose a USB enclusure for 2.5? IDE hard drives.

You attach your hard drive to a USB/IDE converter and then connect it to another working computer (laptop or desktop) via USB cable.

Advantages of using external USB enclosure:
1. Easy to assemble and setup even for novice users.
2. Can be connected to a laptop or desktop computer.

Disadvantages of using external USB enclosure:
Slow data transfer rate.
If you computer supports USB 2.0, the data transfer rate will not exceed 480Mbps (I assume the enclosure also supports USB 2.0).
If your computer supports only USB 1.1, the data transfer rate will not exceed 12Mbps and it might take hours to transfer large amount of data.

The second method is for more advanced users.

You can access and remove data much faster if you use a laptop to IDE hard drive adapter (on the picture below mentioned as IDE connector).

One side of the adapter connects to the laptop hard drive. The second connects to the available IDE cable inside your PC computer.

Advantages of using Laptop to IDE hard drive adapter:
Fast data transfer rate. If you have a Ultra ATA/100 (UDMA/100) laptop hard drive, the data transfer rate will be 100MBs.

Disadvantages of using Laptop to IDE hard drive adapter:
1. Not for novice users. Requires PC disassembly and hardware configuration.
2. Can be connected only to PC computes.

On the picture below you can see how the adapter is connected to a PC computer.

How to recover data from a laptop SATA hard drive.

A SATA hard drive has a different interface. It has a data connector and power connector.

A laptop SATA hard drive also can be connected to an external USB enclosure. Make sure to choose a USB enclusure for 2.5? SATA hard drives.
If you are using an external USB enclusure, the data transfer rate will be limited to the speed of the USB port (480Mbps or 12Mbps) even though SATA hard drives has transfer rate 150MBps.

For a faster data recovery I would suggest connecting your SATA hard drive directly to the SATA ports inside a PC computer. Fortunately, you can use same type of cables as you use for regular 3.5? desktop hard drives.

A key fell off the laptop keyboard. Fixing the problem

One or more keys fell off the laptop keyboard and you are not sure how to put them back? Don’t worry, most likely you can fix the keyboard and it’s not necessary to buy a new one. There is no universal repair guide because all keyboards are different. Here’s what I usually do in this case.

Situation 1. The key cap and key retainer fell off the keyboard and you cannot figure out how to assemble them back.

Missing a key? Find a new one at LaptopKey.com

Carefully remove the cap from any other working key so the key retainer stays connected to the keyboard.

Take a closer look at the key retainer, it’s connected to the keyboard at four different points.

Assemble the disconnected retainer the same way as one on the keyboard and put it back in place.

Put the key cap on the retainer and snap the cap back in place.

Situation 2. The key fell off the keyboard and you lost the cap or the retainer. In this case you can purchase a single key here, just search for it. (Search examples: “Dell keyboard key”, “Toshiba keyboard key”, “HP keyboard key”, etc… )
After you found a new key, put it back in place the same way as I described in the situation 1.

Installing the space bar key.

The space bar key is connected to the keyboard a little bit differently then any other key.

There is a metal retainer connected to the space bar key (on some keyboard models). Separate the retainer from the space bar key with a flathead screwdriver.

Install the retainer back in place as it shown on the picture. You have to engage the retainer with the small hooks on the keyboard.

Put the space bar key back in place and gently press on it with fingers until it snaps back in place.

That’s it. The space bar key is installed back in place and should work as before. If you still cannot fix your keyboard, then you’ll have to find a new one and replace it.

Here’s another technique you can use to fix a broken keyboard key.

As you see on the picture below the keyboard is missing the U key. The key cap, retainer and even silicone membrane were lost. Let’s see if it’s possible to temporarily fix the U key without buying any spare parts.

Personally, I cannot use keyboard without U key but I can live without a key located on the side from the right ALT, I’m not even sure what this key does. In the following guide I will remove the useless key and install it in the place of missing U.

Carefully remove the key cap with your fingers.

Remove the retainer. The retainer has two pieces connected to each other. If one piece got disconnected from the other, connect them back together.

The silicon membrane is glued to the keyboard. Very very slowly separate the membrane from the keyboard with a sharp knife. While creating this disassembly guide I damaged one membrane because I wasn’t careful enough.
Again, you have to be very careful removing the membrane.
If you damage the membrane you’ll end up with two broken keys instead of just one.

The silicon membrane has been removed.

Now apply some superglue on the bottom edge of the membrane, just enough to keep the membrane in the place.

Carefully place the membrane in the center of the U. Make sure the membrane is positioned correctly. Wait until the glue cures.

Install the retainer.

Position the key cap above the retainer. Gently press on the key cap until it clips in and connects to the retainer.

Now you can use the U key again.

Removing and replacing laptop keyboard

These instructions will help you to remove and replace keyboards on various laptops. I will not be able to cover all models but you’ll get the idea. Steps for removing and replacing the keyboard are similar for most laptops.

Warning!
- if your laptop is still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, do not open the case or you can loose the warranty
- always remove the battery and unplug the AC adapter before you open the laptop case
- if you damage the keyboard connector on the motherboard you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard
- proceed on your own risk

Sony laptop

I took these pictures from a Sony Vaio PCG-K33 (model PCG-9S1L) notebook. Should be similar for some other Sony notebooks too.

Insert a small flathead screwdriver under the keyboard bezel and carefully lift it up. Continue releasing plastic latches and removing the keyboard bezel with your fingers.

Be careful, on some models the bezel might be connected to the motherboard as it shown on the picture above. If you accidentally pulled the cable, connect it back. It is not necessary to disconnect the keyboard bezel from the motherboard in order to remove and replace the keyboard, just put it aside so you can access the keyboard screws.

Remove three (or more) screws from the top of the keyboard. Carefully lift up the keyboard from the laptop case.

The keyboard connects to the motherboard via a flat ribbon cable. Before you pull the cable from the connector, you’ll have to unlock the connector.

The image above illustrates how to unlock the keyboard connector. Carefully move the connector lock 2-3 millimeters up and after that pull the keyboard cable. To install the keyboard, follow the above mentioned steps in the reverse order.

Toshiba laptop

The following pictures were taken from a Toshiba Satellite A135 laptop. The keyboard removal instructions will be almost the same for most modern Toshiba laptops.

The keyboard bezel removal procedure is similar to the above mentioned Sony Vaio laptop. Lift it up with a small screwdriver and remove using fingers. On most Toshiba laptops the keyboard bezel doesn’t have any circuit board underneath, it’s just a piece of plastic and you don’t have to worry about cables.

After the bezel is removed you get an access to the keyboard screws. Remove two (or more) screws. Release the plastic latch pointed with the red arrow and lift up the keyboard. Carefully put the keyboard aside so you can access the connector underneath the keyboard. Do not forget that the keyboard is still connected to the motherboard.

Before you remove the keyboard, you’ll have to open the connector and release the flat ribbon cable.

Here’s a closeup picture of the keyboard connector on the motherboard. Be careful, this type of connector is fragile. On the left image the connector is closed. On the right image the connector is opened. Unlock the connector by moving the lock up as it shown on the right image and after that release the ribbon cable. Remove and replace the keyboard. For assembly instructions follow all the steps in the reverse order.

If you are looking for laptop disassembly instructions, check out laptop service manuals.

How To Install Laptop RAM Modules.

This guide was developed to instruct readers on the proper procedures for installing memory modules into a laptop computer. It includes step-by-step instructions for the physical installation of a memory module into those laptop systems that have an access panel to the memory modules. Not all laptops have this type of access. If yours does not, then it will probably require installation from an authorized technician.

For additional information about installing computer memory into your computer system, it is recommended that you read any user manuals that came with your computer for specific procedures that may be required. For more information for purchasing memory upgrades for a computer, please refer to the Before You Buy Memory upgrades article.

  1. Turn off the computer and remove all power cords from the computer system.
  2. Locate the panel used for access to the memory modules. This is generally located on the bottom of the laptop computer. Refer to your laptop instruction manuals for locating the panel.
  3. Remove any screws that the panel in place and place somewhere safe to prevent losing it.
  4. Remove the panel from the laptop and set aside.
  5. If replacing or upgrading an existing memory module, remove the memory modules by undoing and module clamps and gently lifting the edge of the module to a 45-degree angle and then pulling the module out of the slot.

  6. Align the notch of the memory module with that of the memory slot and gently insert the module into the slot at a 45-degree angle.
  7. Once all the pins are in the slot, gently rotate the module down flat until the clamps lock into the module into place.
  8. Replace the memory access panel onto the laptop computer.
  9. Replace any screws or fasteners that hold the panel in place.
  10. Replace the power cord and power up your computer system.

Once the memory has been installed into the computer, the physical process is complete.
